Must be lots of gays in Australia

There has to be a lot of gays in Australia - why else would God be punishing that country like He is? California is a mess. The firestorms of the summer have yielded to mudslides and floods. This states need a bailout, but stoic ideology by our elected officials are causing problems that grow more dire every day. If I didn't know better, I would say it was God’s revenge on California for the way the state voted on Proposition 8.

That sounds pretty silly, doesn’t it? But if Prop 8 had been voted down, how hard would it be to imagine that very mindset saturating the internet, right-wing propaganda machines and the very pulpits used to forward that agenda throughout the state?

Very little gets me riled up any more. I used to try to fix all the world’s wrongs, but now I will leave that to today’s young bucks. It’s hard to imagine that homosexual rights would get my dander up, but wrong is wrong no matter who it is that is getting the short end of the stick.
I have a question for you. Over the years, how many homosexuals have come to your door on a Saturday morning – or any day, for that matter – neatly dressed in their black slacks and white shirts and asked you to follow their way of life to redemption?

I would venture to say the answer to that question was a big fat zero, but I reckon that if that question was asked about those who supported Prop 8, the answer might be a little different.
One of the mantras of those supporting Prop. 8 is that those against it have are trying to enforce their views on others. Kind of hypocritical, don’t you think? Another mantra is that Prop. 8 was about protecting marriage. If that was true, then adultery should be a capital offense and divorce not an option.

I have heard that the purpose of marriage is to raise a family. So should those who choose to be childless be jailed? Should those who are sterile not be allowed to marry?
Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? No more ridiculous than a guy in favor of Prop. 8 I saw on a talking-head show the other day who justified his position by saying that marriage between blood relatives and with animals are illegal too.

That’s not ridiculous – that is desperate. If it is not about protecting marriage or propagating the species, then what is it about? What is left?

There was a time when a Black man was counted as three-fifths if a person. There was a time when a woman couldn’t vote. While the women’s suffrage movement was a little before my time, I lived through the Civil Rights movement. So imagine my surprise as a California boy when I hit Tennessee for a two-year stint in the military and found out that as far as some good-old boys are concerned, three-fifths of a person is too much to consider a man of color to be and women belong barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. Fortunately, the law protects us from those knuckle draggers.

Let’s play the what-if game for a minute. What if the homosexual movement in this country organized and decided they were all going to move to one state and take it over? Let’s use Rhode Island as an example. Imagine five years from now that the Ocean State was majority homosexual and voted that heterosexual marriage was not allowed. How long would that stand?

I can’t sanction violence or property damage in furtherance of an agenda, but I guess if I was fighting for something that would impact nobody but myself and lies were being used against me, I might be tempted to become extreme in my pursuit of fairness.

But I will tell you what I can condemn, and this is not limited to Prop. 8, and that is using children as props to further an agenda. If your viewpoint is so shallow and baseless that you have to hide behind children to get your point across, you don’t have much of a viewpoint at all.
